On April 13th, 2024, the picturesque town of Argos, Greece, was the setting for an enlightening discourse on the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. Professor Giannis Stamatellos, from the Institute of Philosophy and Technology (IPT), took centre stage at the conference "Exploring the Limits: Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Approaches to the Educational Process" to talk about trustworthy AI, ethical challenges and prospects.
The cornerstone of his presentation was an introduction to THEMIS 5.0, a research and innovation project that encapsulates the European Union's emphasis on AI trustworthiness. THEMIS 5.0, with its robust ethical principles, is co-creating tools to help people assess the trustworthiness of AI decisions themselves. It's results will contribute to guiding the ethical governance of AI in the EU, ensuring that human values remain at the forefront of technological advancement.
Prof. Stamatellos argued that the trustworthiness of AI systems is not just a technical concern but also a fundamental determinant of educational quality and public trust. In an era where AI's influence permeates various facets of society, including education, ensuring ethical AI becomes paramount to fostering a sustainable and inclusive learning environment.
By sharing insights into THEMIS and the EU's ethical principles, Prof. Stamatellos reinforced the importance of a human-centric approach to AI development, ensuring that technology remains a force for good in shaping the future of education and society at large.
"It was a great honour for me to participate in this wonderful event", said Prof. Stamatellos. "It was a profound opportunity to ignite conversations that transcend borders and disciplines, and gain new insights that we can leverage in THEMIS 5.0".
