The purpose of the THEMIS 5.0 project is to cultivate an ethical and human-centric philosophy in the decision making of AI development, working within the confines of European legal and ethical frameworks. THEMIS 5.0 works with relevant stakeholders to co-create solutions to help determine the trustworthiness and reliability of AI, and empower citizens to provide input to decision making and make informed judgements when interacting with AI, as well as creating a sufficiently open environment to deliberate sustainable policy development.

Users can be better informed about AI through knowledge of what data is used and how AI decisions are reached, as well as investigate, comprehend and form an opinion on the reliability of AI solutions. And with this information, they can challenge AI systems by realising potential biases or faults and provide relevant feedback to developers to improve their technology such as by making it more explainable and user friendly. Additionally, greater transparency in AI ensures that both users and developers take responsibility for the utilisation of AI.
The THEMIS 5.0 technology will be tested and evaluated through a series of real-life use case pilots in three major industries: healthcare, port management, and journalism. And the THEMIS 5.0 ecosystem will enable participants to develop their ability to employ AI based tools and ensure responsible decision making when interacting with AI. This framework will be open publicly, so that people and organisations of varying sizes and technological maturity can utilise THEMIS 5.0 for their own ecosystems.
